Background of the Study
Instagram stories have evolved into a powerful medium of visual communication that blends images, short videos, and textual narratives. In Nigeria, these story narratives play a pivotal role in driving semantic shifts as they combine visual cues with language to create new meanings. The fusion of imagery and text enables a dynamic interaction where semantic boundaries are constantly negotiated, leading to shifts in the meaning of words and expressions. This study examines how Instagram story narratives influence semantic evolution among Nigerian users, with particular emphasis on how visual elements modify or enhance the semantic content of accompanying texts (Ibrahim, 2023). The interplay between visual storytelling and language provides a rich context for exploring how meanings are constructed and reinterpreted in real time. Moreover, the ephemeral nature of Instagram stories encourages rapid and iterative semantic adaptations that mirror cultural trends and social commentary (Uche, 2024). By focusing on visual communication, this research reveals the transformative potential of multimedia narratives in shaping linguistic meaning, thereby offering a nuanced understanding of digital semantics in contemporary Nigerian society (Nwankwo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Although Instagram stories are widely used for storytelling, little is known about their role in triggering semantic shifts in Nigerian digital communication. Current studies have predominantly focused on traditional text-based semantics, leaving the multimodal dimension underexplored. The rapid integration of visual cues with narrative text in Instagram stories leads to complex semantic transformations that challenge conventional language models. This research seeks to fill this gap by examining how visual narratives impact word meanings and contextual interpretations in Nigerian social media. Without systematic investigation, the underlying processes driving these semantic shifts remain ambiguous, thus limiting our ability to understand the broader implications of digital visual communication (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To investigate the semantic shifts induced by Instagram story narratives.

  2. To analyze the role of visual cues in modifying textual meanings.

  3. To propose a model of multimedia semantic evolution in digital communication.

Research Questions:

  1. How do Instagram story narratives influence semantic shifts in Nigerian social media?

  2. What visual elements contribute most to these semantic changes?

  3. How can multimedia narratives be integrated into existing semantic models?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it integrates visual communication with semantic analysis, offering fresh insights into the impact of Instagram stories on language evolution. It provides theoretical and practical frameworks for understanding digital semantics, benefiting linguists, educators, and media practitioners. The findings will inform strategies for effective communication in a digital age, where multimedia narratives shape contemporary language use (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Instagram Story: A short, temporary post on Instagram combining images, videos, and text.

  2. Semantic Shifts: Changes in the meaning of words or phrases over time.

  3. Visual Communication: The use of images and visual elements to convey messages.
